Amazon to sell its e-book Kindle in UK
Amazon will soon start sales of its two new, lighter and smaller versions of the Kindle ebook reader in the UK. The company has announced that the sale will start on August 27. The company has tagged the ebook retailing price at £109 for a Wi-Fi only version while a 3G wireless version will cost £149.
The launch was long-awaited UK after the American launch of the original Kindle in November 2007. On Amazon.com, the ebook reader has subsequently been the top selling product for the past two years. Reports say that Amazon’s Kindle book store will sell 400,000 new books at lower prices than hardbacks. The prices also will be lower than a million out of copyright works. The company hopes that the titles like bestsellers such as Peter Mandelson’s The Third Man and One Day by David Nicholls will enable its store to compete with the pre-existing Apple iBookstore and rivals such as Kobo and take customers away from.
The Kindle weighs 247g and has features like improved page turning speed and contrast as compared to the previous Kindle versions. The owners of the 3G device will pay no monthly fees. The Kindle screen offers a black and white display only. But Amazon has also released Kindle Apps for other devices including Apple’s iPad.
